Dr. Hassan Basajjabala’s bid to reclaim the Chair of NRM National Entrepreneurs League is being haunted by a series of land grabbing scandals associated to him.
Basajja is tussling it out with former Tororo Municipality MP, Hon. Sanjay Tanna, Michael Kakuru, King Ceasor Mulenga among other for the position whose elections are slated for 25th August, 2025.
However, accusations of land grabbing recently popped up during Jumah Prayers at Old Kampala Mosque with UMSC leaders urging NRM Delegates not to trust Basajja with this sensitive position considering his unscrupulous land dealings while Chairman UMSC.
During the prayers held on 8th August, 2025,
Sheikh Muhammed Ssemambo, one of the khatibs said that leadership is a trust from Allah, not a license to plunder. Ssemambo argues that a man who has abused the offices of both religion and business cannot be trusted with any other, urging the NRM delegates, not to give him their votes.
During his last tenure as Chairman, UMSC, Basajjabalaba was impeached for grabbing Muslim properties worth billions of shillings and mortgaging Muslim Council properties.
He is also accused of fraudulent purchase of Prime land belonging to UMSC. The special audit report by the Auditor General for financial years 2000 – 2007, says Haks Express, a company owned by Basajja, got the premium of Shs260M and ground rent of Shs26M per annum. Basajja is accused of selling the plots in 2006.
While the sub-lease had never been registered, the land was sold to a one Kakumba Francis on April, 2006 and on June 4th 2007, the Town Clerk authorized the transfer of the land from Haks to Kakumba,.( Ruth Kijjambu).
Besides, the Muslim properties, Basajja was variously indicted for grabbing 23-acre piece of land belonging to the Uganda Broadcasting Corporation (UBC) situated in Bugolobi leading to numerous Parliamentary queries.
To make matters worse, Basajja applied for a compensation claim for refund of Shs11.5b for the botched sale of 23-acre piece of land belonging to the Uganda Broadcasting Corporation (UBC) prompting the Inspectorate of Government intervention.
This was after Basajjabalaba through his Haba Group Ltd sought to recover Shs11.5 billion after courts of law rendered the transactions and sale agreement of the land at Bugolobi null and void.
The IGG in his report of 2nd Feb 2019, found Basajja culpable in grabbing city square land, including grabbing Owino market land.
With all this in the public know, many NRM Cadres are even asking why a man with such a tainted reputation can be allowed to contest for a position that decides on national policy issues.
