WIDER PICTURE AND TERRIBLE IMPLICATIONS
It is alleged that in Uganda, unsuspecting consumers, especially children are at risk of being diseased following illusory brands of toothpaste sold on market and over the years, consumers have been asked to be alert and report any suspicious products on the market as some business community engaged in putting dubious products on market remain insincere to following standards.
Counterfeit toothpaste is a growing problem in the health and wellness industry not only in Uganda but the entire great lakes region, with knockoff products flooding the market and posing serious risks to consumers. According to Dental experts, using counterfeit toothpaste may contain harmful ingredients that can have negative effects on oral health.
‘If the toothpaste’s ingredients do not comply with the standards, it could affect dental and oral health despite good oral care habits. When purchasing toothpaste, consumers should be mindful of the product’s pH value. Prolonged contact with too acidic (pH value too low) or too alkaline (pH value too high) oral care products might be detrimental to dental and oral health’’, warns experts.
One of the biggest risks of using fictive toothpaste is the potential for toxic ingredients to be present in the product. These harmful substances can cause irritation, inflammation, and even infection in mouths, leading to serious health issues. The American Dental Association (ADA) says in some cases, counterfeit toothpaste contains dangerous substances such as lead, which can have long-term health implications.
Additionally, ADA says counterfeit toothpaste may not provide the same level of protection against cavities, gum disease, and other oral health issues as genuine products. This can lead to further dental problems down the line, potentially costing us more money in the long run for expensive dental treatments.
‘’To protect yourself from the risks of counterfeit toothpaste, it is important to always purchase your oral care products from reputable sources. Make sure to check for the seal of approval on the packaging, as this indicates that the product has met the highest standards for safety and effectiveness.
Your dentist can also provide guidance on which toothpaste brands are best for your individual oral health needs’’, reads information from ADA website.
Can Toothpaste Affect Your Skin?
According to experts, toothpaste, particularly those containing Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS), can cause skin irritation or even contact dermatitis (inflammation of the skin) on the palms and hands. This is due to SLS acting as a detergent and surfactant, which can be harsh for some individuals. While not everyone reacts to SLS, those sensitive to it may experience redness, itching, or dryness on their palms. Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) is a common ingredient in many types of toothpaste used to create a foaming effect.
However, it can be an irritant for some people, especially with prolonged or repeated exposure. Such conditions, characterized by skin inflammation, can manifest as redness, itching, and dryness on the hands. In more severe cases, it can lead to blistering or cracking.
Besides SLS, other ingredients in toothpaste, such as certain flavorings or preservatives, can also contribute to skin irritation.
